Happy New Year!

Well its a new year and we are well on our way to be being settled back here in Oregon. Its been a huge adjustment but we have seen the Lord work in so many ways, its overwhelmingly amazing. Nate started seminary at George Fox two weeks ago and is really enjoying it. His headaches and body aches arent bad every day and we thank the Lord for those good days. The girls just finished their first half of the school year and are doing great. Chelsea has started playing the keyboard during worship for the Sr High youth group at church, although she doesnt turn the sound up too high. She also has started back with piano lessons and in the near future will occasionally play Sunday mornings at our church. Emily has taken up the violin and is enjoying that. I am looking for a job at the moment. I was waiting till the holidays were over and now they are so here I am filling out applications.

Some people have asked about my father, so here is a little update - My father stayed out of the hospital for almost 8 weeks over the holidays and we are all appreciative of that time the Lord allowed us to have with our dad. Two weeks ago he was put in the hospital for complications from the medication and stayed for a week. He was given results from his blood work this last Friday(Jan. 25) and the outlook is not good. His cancer(igg) counts are higher now then they ever have been and the Drs want to try another form of chemotherapy. We are all praying for my parents as they decided what to do.

Isaiah 64:4
Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.

Hello and Goodbye or Goodbye and Hello

Hello Family,

God is good. We are back in the States after about a two-week trip to Mozambique and a day spent in Indiana at OMS. Our time in MZ was very good but very difficult. We had time with most of the leaders that we have grown close to. In our time back in MZ we heard of a new baby being born (to Nelsen in Gurue) and new churches being planted (5 new ones in Nampula). Life continues to go on in both our homes (Oregon and MZ) while we're away. It was very difficult to say goodbyes and leave a ministry in what we thought was an untimely manner, but we know that God is in control and has a plan. He not only has a plan, but a better plan.

In our time at OMS in Indiana we met with many people concerning our future ministry. Right now (until I’m cleared medically to travel) I will continue to give oversight to ECC ministries in MZ and possibly other countries. We want to keep what God is doing in MZ moving forward. We will also be looking at using the model created in MZ and how we as an organization might develop it and use it in other ECC ministries. Once cleared to travel we will help with implementation and training of ECC multiplication teams and partners.

All this will be in balance with my main focus right now, completing my Master of Divinity. I will be starting at George Fox Evangelical Seminary full-time in January. Our official status with OMS is “Study Assignment”. We are planning on returning to the field at the completion of my degree. We ask that you would prayerfully consider continuing to support us in this new chapter of ministry. We will not be receiving a salary during this assignment, but still will need a support account to facilitate the above ministries.

The Girls are adjusting well to life and school back in the States. I will be on staff at our local church on a part-time basis and Deanna will be looking for employment. We thank you all for your support over the past few years. We will keep you updated as we get settled in and life starts again.

Your Brothers in Christ,
Nathan & Deanna goodbye

Back in Oregon

Greetings Brothers & Sisters,

Can you believe it is already September? We left Mozambique in May for what we thought would be a few weeks or maybe a month. As most of you know Nathan became ill with Vivax malaria in December of 2006. He was treated for the malaria, but became sick once again just a couple weeks later. With many trips to the doctors in MZ and many different diagnoses we found ourselves no further ahead in April. At the end of April we traveled to our doctor in South Africa. Upon leaving that doctors office we better understood just how sick Nathan was. The diagnosis was that the Vivax Malaria was never effectively treated, and the correct medicine was ordered to treat it. When Nathan was done with the cycle of medicine we once again traveled to South Africa for a doctors appointment. At the direction of the doctors and with the peace of God, we decided to return to the States for what we thought would be a short period of time. Over the course of the next two months Nate went to 3 different doctors and they couldn’t find anything. They said that his body is so worn out from having malaria for so long that it’s just going to take time to get better. He is still experiencing headaches, body aches, nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

During this same time Deanna’s fathers bone cancer came back in the form of a tumor in his spine. In our time back the family has experienced many ups and downs in regards to his health. He has been undergoing a number of rounds of radiation treatments and last month he started receiving chemo treatments. On August 31 he broke his arm and at the following appointments his doctors decided to discontinue any form of treatment.

As the months passed we continually sought Gods direction. We finally saw that it was time for us to leave the field early. We are planning on going back to Mozambique in the next month or two for a couple of weeks to pack up our house and to say our good-byes at least for now. We are still waiting for medical approval to travel. Our scheduled term (of 4 years on the filed) would end in June of 2008, and our plans had been to take a study leave and allow Nathan to complete his Masters of Divinity. So, Nathan is now enrolled to start schooling in January at George Fox Evangelical Seminary. This course will take Nate about 3 years to complete. We will stay connected with OMS during this time, helping with OMS NW regional work and with ECC training in Africa. At this time we don’t know where the Lord will take us after Nate’s schooling is finished but we know the Lord knows and we find our peace in that.

We would ask you to pray about continuing to support us to allow us to travel to OMS fields and assist with ECC pastoral training. We will not be receiving a salary or support during Nathans schooling. We want to thank you all so much for your sacrificial giving to permit us to serve our Lord and Savior in Mozambique. Please continue to pray for the ECC work in MZ. Currently there are no other missionaries to step into our ministry, but the ministry will continue under the direction of Juka Fernando, our Mozambican brother. Because of your giving we have seen over 6000 decisions for Christ and have initiated about 40 churches. All glory to God!

ECC In Mozambique

Hello Everyone,

God is good! The ECC ministry in Mozambique has been richly blessed this year. These are some of the annual statistics for MZ this past calendar year.

Number of Decisions to accept Christ 2031

Number of Baptisms 57

Total Number of distinct people in structured discipleship training * 143

Total Number of distinct people in a program of leadership training * 81

Number of people attending main
Service each week ** 2591
Number of extensions, cells, house churches, VCP
Or daughter churches started this year
(Worshiping groups) 26

I received the annual statistics for ECC worldwide yesterday and here is a little look at the ministry,

“ECC continued to see significant growth in the number of decisions for Christ, baptisms and churches planted in 2006. To God be all the glory. Here is a brief report of last year’s results.

Decisions for Christ
Baptisms Participants in Discipleship Training Participants in Lay Leadership Training
Churches Established
142,112 29,973 10,385 6,076 737

The continued training and deployment of Church Multiplication Teams around the world has led to a 37% annual increase in decisions for Christ, a 39% increase in the number of baptisms and a 71% increase in the number of churches established. God is good and He is answering our prayers.”

I have been traveling a lot lately in efforts to start new work in other provinces, increase involvement in some areas we currently have ministries, and new areas in provinces we currently have work.

In upper Zambezia one of our Brothers from Maputo has moved both him and his family to Gurue to further the ongoing work in Gurue and the surrounding districts. Nelsen has been a church planter and now will be training others to plant churches. Nelsen moved in January with his wife (Felizmina) and son that had never traveled that far north in MZ. They are ministering in a new language and culture. Please be praying for them in these beginning months of this new ministry. Our vision is to initiate 20 new churches in this province this year, please pray.

Nampula Province is a new area of ministry we have been praying for God to open a way to this new work. At this time we believe that God has called two trainers to leave Maputo for this province. Please be praying for the leading of this ministry. Our vision is to initiate 15 new churches this next year, please pray for the assimilation for the trainers to another culture and for communication, as they will be working in another local language then their own.

Inhambane Province is a province that we started work in about one year ago. We are going to strengthen this work and hold pastoral training seminars open to the churches in the Panda district. This is the same training ministry we currently have, but we are widening the scope and depth of the trainings. Please pray for the African Independent Churches we are partnering with.

Maputo Province is of course the oldest work OMS has in MZ. We pray that we can initiate 25 new churches in new areas of Maputo Province.

Each one of the new believes and new leaders represent discipleship and pastoral training. This is at the heart of the ECC work. By working in partnership with the Nazarene Church we will be starting distance-learning course that will lead to the ordination of the pastors. This Saturday we will start the first course with 10 students and we pray that in four months we will be starting our second course with another 25. As I sit here and think back over the past few months, it is amazing to see the hand of God.

We thank you for all your love and support.

In Christ,
Nathan

The Baby is coming out

You think the title is a joke but really that is what happens. When babies are born here in Mozambique the Mother and the baby stay in the house for 1 month to keep the baby from getting sick and then they have a coming out party. With lots of singing, dancing and throwing the baby around. We have had 3 couples in the church that have had babies in the last month and a half. Last Saturday Nate and I along with two new missionaries got to experience this party for Juka and Elenas baby. We came a little late due to the new missionaries that flew in that day. When we arrived the baby was already being danced around. Normally they toss the baby up in the air(much higher then I am comfortable with) and then hand the baby to someone else and it goes on from person to person. Well one older lady thought she would add some excitement to the day and threw the baby up in the air only to catch her by her ankle, and everyone gasped. She then hung on to her ankle and like a windmill circled her arm. She decided that the toss wasnt enough and she pretended to drop her and caught her arm. As we watched the babys head and body jerk we thought, can this be a good thing? The grandma of the baby quickly grabbed the baby and held on to her tightly until the older lady sat down. Everyone then laughed and thought it was funny. The reason they do this is to scare the fear out of the baby, so she can be strong and healthy when she leaves the house. I am not sure if this works. They also have a little time to share and one of the major topics from the families was how long they should wait to have another baby. They even voted on it, making it 1 yr 6 mo before they could have another baby. We will have two more of these ceremonies in the next little bit and will let you know how they go. Below is a photo of the baby, Milca Mabel, the day of her coming out.

Tembe Clip & Some Words

Hello To All,

We have been on the move a lot lately. We just returned from a trip to Panda in Inhambane province. It went well and the Lord worked mightily. There were two friends (Lowell & Bobby) from North Carolina that joined this team to Panda. Before our trip to Panda we visited Tembe Park just over the MZ boarder in SA. We had a very rare sighting that I wanted to share. If you don’t like snakes you should not proceed.
I will write a blogger next month and get you updated. I’m only home for a couple days before leaving once again. I will only spend six days in Maputo total this month.

In Christ,
Nathan

Hello All,

This is just a test and only a test if this had been an actual emergency....
