SUNDAY AUGUST 29 CHURCH SERVICES

Yesterday morning we went out to SAO DEMASSO for the church service. This is a fairly new church. It was a good service with 30-40 people and Raul one of the ECC team leaders preached. An average service here in Maputo is anywhere between 2-3 hours long. Mostly closer to 3. So Pastor Randy go for it! :)

They love to sing as I am sure we have mentioned and after only 4 weeks we are enjoying that enthusiasim. I do have to say Nate is getting the motions down and dancing right along with them. It makes them laugh, so it is good. It makes me laugh too. His relationships with the poeple we are working with is growing and it is neat to see. I am looking forward to this week to participate with him in his meetings as I now can.

The girls did great yesterday. They enjoy looking at the cute babies and kids that are always running around. I am amazed somtimes how mature they act. They try to sing and Emily loves to clap so she gets right in. Sometimes Chelsea, along with me and Nate, get lost when singing and have to ask where we are at.

Last night there was a special service at the Maputo City Church for Madalena, the new Director of the Maputo Biblical & Theological Seminary and for Nathan and the family as new ECC Director. It was a time to bring all the seminary students, all the ECC workers and the Pastors/Leaders from all the OMS planted churches. It was neat to see them all together and it was good to meet some of those people that I had not met yet. Nate has met most and so he introduced me to many. They prayed for us and Harold Brown spoke with an interpretur. It seemed to go very well. I can see the Lord working already and I dread for the day we will have to say goodbye just as I dreaded saying goodby to you all. I know the Lord has called us here and its so apparent in the way He has worked in our lives and the girls lives to make us feel so at home here.

Thakn you for your prayers and continued support. We love you all!

August 27 & 28 FIELD COUNCIL MEETINGS

Saturday we wrapped up our Field Council meeting. It was a great time of planning and understanding how everything works. It was a long day from 9am to almost 9pm. The girls did great and didnt complain once. Being at school all day they had plenty to do. They kept busy by watching movies and playing on the computer and even playing school. Chelsea was a great help and really kept Emily busy. We did get nominated for two different positions. Nate will be the Chairman of the Field Council and I am the Secretary of the Field Council. Niether of us know what we are supposed to do but we were offered help so I am sure it wont be too tough.

Here is a picture of the OMS team here in Mozambique. This is taken on the steps at the school, Christian Academy of Mozambique, where the girls go.

8-27 Fun For All

Hello Friends,

Well it is Friday night for us and yes it feels like it. Since the last update We had some more language school, a prayer meeting with the ECC teams, and a bible study with the ECC coordinators, and field council meetings. Yes it’s been a very full couple days. The new training material is great, and I can see new growth and a deeper understanding of Gods word with the teams already. They are a great group of people that I love to be with. They are committed people with huge hearts. After the prayer meeting today we stopped by a family’s house to visit because of a death in the family. It was another cultural learning time for me. We sang some songs and had a time of prayer with the family. It was an unexpected death of a young man from our Khongolate church. Our field meeting is going well. Please pray for tomorrow as we outline goals for this next year. Thank you for your love and support.

Nathan

8-25 News

Hello All,

Well the last few days have been very full. We had a work team from Canada here that was working on the Khongolate church. They also had time for the art market, a couple church services, and much fellowship. It was great to have them here. A few of them need to know Christ as their savior. Please pray for them. The new church in Zimpeto had their first bible study today. I will give you a report on that in the future. The new train & multiply material I’ve been putting together was handed out to the ECC leaders on Monday (the first booklet). We are excited to see how God will use it. You could also be praying for this weekend as we have our Field Meeting. We as a team will look at the overview of last year’s ministries and make goals for this next year. Please be praying for Gods direction for the field, unity in the team, and a passion for the lost.

The kids are enjoying their new school and making new friends. Chelsea has a lot more homework then she’s accustomed to, but is learning how to deal with it. . Language studies are going well. We want to speak NOW, but it’s coming along. I started my Moody online courses yesterday and am looking forward to the classes. We have been out of water and power for two days now and don't know when it will be fixed, so you could also pray for that. Thank you all for your prayers and emails. Please email with any questions that you might have.

Zimpeto, Jesus Film & First Sunday - Photo's

Greetings Family,

Well the day in Zimpeto was awesome. There were plenty of those unplanned things that happen here, but the whole day was blessed. We started off by completing the church and rest room. Then we did a little landscaping and the finishing touches for the evening and the first Sunday service. The evening started off with a lot of singing and dancing in true African style. The worship band was made up of three guitars (2 acoustic, one bass) a drum and two lead vocalist. You would need to be here to truly appreciate it. The Jesus film started around 6:30 and there were maybe 200 people for the start of it but people continued to gather and I would estimate 400 people had come out to hear and see the gospel. Quite a few people raised there hands as to making some kind of commitment at the end, we talked and prayed with many afterward. Then it was all wrapped up with some more singing and dancing.

The first Sunday in Zimpeto was much the same way. It was to start around 9:00 and at 8:59 there were only the leaders there (3 people). By the time we finished singing and praying there were 40 people there, many of whom had never attended church. There were a couple ladies that are going to start coming without their husbands because they are involved in traditional worship. They both asked for prayer for their husband’s salvation.

To see God work is incredible. We feel truly blessed to be part of the ministries here in Mozambique. Please be praying for our field meeting on the 27th – 29th when we will layout next year’s goals. Please be praying for us this week, as we will be introducing some new training material for the ECC teams. We would ask that you also could continue to pray for our language learning.

In Christ,
Nathan

8-20 Update

We had language school this morning and then I left for Khongolate right when we got home. I had a great time out in the village and we finalized all the plans for Zimpeto tomorrow. We have some new training material I'm introducing this next week, and the coordinators are very interested in it. It is great material that will allow us to train nationals as we head further out of Maputo. With the distance and cost it would not be practical for leaders to travel to Maputo for schooling. We had a team from canada come in last night. They will be working in Khongolate at the new church there and will come out to Zimpeto tomorrow night. Thank you for all the prayers and emails for Zimpeto. We will finish the church tomorrow and I'll give you a report on the days happenings ASAP.

We had Chelsea's and Emily's back to school night tonight. It was fun to meet other missionaries and ebassy workers. Both of their teachers are great! Thank you all again for your support.

Nathan

Zebra 08-18

Hello All,

Well it was another day of language school and looked over some new ECC training materials. We did have some fun with Raul (an ECC coordinator) today. We had time to look in one of the local art markets and found a zebra skin. It still had the hooves and tail on it. It was unique, and cost 22 million Meta about 960 dollars. So if anyone wants a zebra for the wall let me know : )

08-16 Update ECC

Greetings All,

We had a field meeting yesterday and I was appointed ECC Director. This came as a huge surprise to me, and to be honest I'm feeling very overwhelmed right now. I know I work best when it can not be done in my strength, so I'm there. As of today I'm responsible for the evangelism, worship and the Jesus film for the Zimpeto church plant this week. I just got home from our Ecc meeting with the leaders in Khongolate, and all went well. All the final plans were made for Saturdays event and we had a great bible study. With language and my new position, my days will be more then full. I am very excited and this is what I wanted but I did not expect it so soon. Please be in prayer for me and my family with our new ministry.

Nathan

Zimpeto Church Plant 08-14 & Photo’s

Hello Family,

Well the first day of this week long church plant went very well. We started with a sandy lot and by the end of the day we had most of the structure up. We had a great time and everyone was safe. As you can see from the photo’s it is a temporary structure, but will serve its purpose for some time to come. We had two cooks to prepare and serve the workers and Deanna worked with them (she'll write about that). There was a little door-to-door evangelism done but most of that will be done this week. The community was defiantly interested in what was going on and many stopped by to talk and look. So, the rest of this week will be spent finish the structure and sharing with people in preparation for the Jesus film on the 21st. Please keep praying for the ECC teams and there physical bodies as well. There are a lot of sicknesses that would keep people from being able to share the good news. The photo's show the building from near start thru the end of the day. There is also a picture of the cooks and Chelsea & Emily's buildings.

In Christ,
Nathan

It was a long day for us all yesterday as we went out early and came back after dark. The girls did so well and did not complain one bit. They played in the sand with what ever they could find and made houses, they even made trees and a toilet. It was very creative. Even the Mozambicans knew that it was a toilet. I had the privelege of helping the cooks with the meal. They didnt speak english and I dont speak portuguese. They did laugh at me a lot when I would shake my head I dont know. So all day they taught me new words and I taught them new words. At one point we wrote words in the sand to try to figure out what things meant. They took me to the market and we bought rice, klin(a soap for the dishes) and some poultry seasoning. They had me washing dishes and helping clean the rice. They made this sauce stuff for the rice. It consisted of rice milk, which one of them squeezed from the rice about 5 times, coconut, poultry seasoning tomatoes and onions, it cooked all day. They would put rice in the bowl with this sauce over it and then put a cold whole fish(type of sardine) on the top. They eat the whole thing, head and all. This was for dinner. For lunch they had bread and cha(tea). Everything was delicious but I did not give the girls any fish knowing they wouldnt eat it. The Lord taught me so much about what a christain Mozambican finds important. And without your prayers for our girls I know that I wouldnt have been able to enjoy and see that. It is very important that our girls enjoy themselves and dont resent us for our work here.
Thank you. Deanna

My Day In Khongolate & Photo’s

It’s been a good couple of days out at Khongolate. Madelana Is in SA so I’ve had the opportunity to go out to Khongolate the last two days. Yesterday I took some building supplies out to the church construction site there (you can see it in the photo’s). Today was an ECC (Every Community For Christ – Evangelism team) prayer meeting and planning for the evangelism tomorrow. It was a great time of sharing and praying. All the workers are young and have that needed passion to see their village, community, and country come to Christ. I don’t understand everything they are praying for, but I can feel it in my inner being. Please continue to pray for the evangelism and church construction in Zimpeto starting tomorrow and finishing with the Jesus film on the 21st. There are some photos attached. They show the preschool kids, the new church construction, and the place we meet (the white tent in the photo's) in Khongolate.

Please Pray ECC Church Plant 8-14 Thru 8-21

Greetings,

Today was a very exciting day for me. We drove out to Khongolate this morning to meet with the ECC team out there. It was a prayer meeting and also discussed the plans for evangelizing a village. We have had a bible study in this village called Zimpeto for almost a year and want to plant a church. We will be taking the ECC team from Khongolate to Zimpeto to do door to door evangelism and at the same time a team of nationals and a team from Canada will be helping build a temporary church to be completed on 8-21. The night of the 21st we will show the Jesus film and then have our first church service on the following day. Please be in prayer for all the details and logistics. Please pray for the teams, as we will be at battle. Pray for spiritual and physical strength and everything else you can think of. Thank you all for your support.

Nathan

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Today was the first day of school and the girls were very excited. Emily hopped right out of bed and had her backpack on 20 minutes before they had to leave. Chelsea wasnt so quick to get going but she was excited to go. They walked with nathan to school today and tonight when we were eating dinner Emily said we never had to run across the streets to get to school in oregon. The streets here arent as quiet as the back roads in Keizer. They both enjoyed school and the classes. Chelsea met a new girl named Esther and she came running up to me and asked if Chelsea could come over tomorrow after school. That made me feel good. Emily said the girl she played with told her school was boring. It is funny what kids say.

Thanks for your prayers,
Deanna

The First Day Of Language School

The first day of language school was great! As I’ve told a couple in our church “we have not mastered the language, but we are one day closer”. Deanna and I have private lessons at a language institute that teach many languages. Our teachers name is Jeronimo, and he’s not a Christian so please pray for him and us that we can share with him. There have been many missionaries thru his doors so he has heard the gospel before. We also had time to look at the girl’s school (once again) and talk with their teachers. They are both very nice people. Chelsea’s teacher lives next door to us and we have come too know them well. Their names are Larry and Susan Weil and they are OMS missionaries. They both work at CAM (Christian Academy of Mozambique) and have helped us a lot to get settled in here. Thank you all for your prayers and emails. I know you are all praying for us.

Sunday's Service 08-08-04

Greetings Family,

Today we attended a Shangaan church service. The Mozambique people love to sing, so the first hour + of the service was dedicated to it (Karen you would love it). The altars were full and Christ was getting hold of many hearts. At this church they also had open congregational prayer time, and at the end with the alter call there would be crying out in prayer then the congregation would pray aloud for them. It was very moving to see. We had a time of greeting the church. It is “The African Way” to welcome you to their church. You have a couple minutes to address the congregation with the help of an interpreter at this point. The services last about 2.25 hours and they had cookies and coke after the service for us. The pastor of this church has been there for over fifteen years through some of the hard times of Mozambique’s history. Thank you all for the emails and we look forward to each one.

In Christ,
Nathan

Our First Mozambique Wedding

This wedding is a very significant event in the life of the country. It is the custom here to buy gifts for your wife’s side of the family in order to be legally married. So the cost of being married in Mozambique makes it impossible for most to be legally married. This is the third wedding out of the group of men in our OMS seminary. The weddings go on for days, with lots of singing and dancing. The actual ceremony was about two and a half hours long, but it was great. There are a lot of praise and worship songs, and the families also had a time to sing to the new couple. The ceremony was held at the T-3 church.

First Update Email From August 4, 2004

Greetings All,

It is great to have our internet up and running, We just finished
having it installed today. Well as you can see by the subject, we are
in Mozambique safe and sound. We arrived Thursday at 3:00pm local time.
All our baggage arrived on the same flight as us, PTL! We have adjusted
to the time zone and have settled in nicely to our new home. We had a
great time in our first national church service, Emily made some
friends and she taught them ring around the rosy. We had the chance to
go out to the Khongolate church where there is a building project going
on right now. Deanna was in a woman's bible study where there were two
languages spoke. It will be good to learn the language which we hope
to start on next week. The girls start school on the 10th and they are
excited. They are sharing a room right now but I'm sure it wont last
long. The house is large and we have lots of room for anyone who wants
to come. :) We are even going to paint some of the walls this week.
They haven't been painted for a long time and need a fresh coat. We
went shopping a few times at different stores in the area and have
found that there is a lot of food we enjoy. They even have a new store
that opened up a few weeks ago called "the Chili Pepper". They had the
same thai spices we used in Oregon and they even had sweet chili. And
if you know us well you know those are things that we enjoy. Deanna
went crazy in the store because they had blue cheese and all these
other fancy cheeses and meats. Just some things that we would have only
on special occasions but it was neat to see if we really felt like some
good cheese we could find it. The craving would have to be strong
though because it is very expensive. If you would want to call us our
number is 0112581400881. The cheapest way is to purchase a
international card at Costco, it would cost .24 per minute. There is no
cheap way for us to call out. Thank you all for your prayers. We both
feel them every day. We love it here and are looking forward to see how
God will use us here. Today I was studying in Joshua 24, and came
across a quote from John Wesley "They that are bound for heaven must be
willing to swim against the stream, and must do, not as most do, but as
the best do". We pray for you as our supporters daily and thank God for
each one of you.
